Our faculty was founded in 1999 as an affiliate of Ondokuz Mayis University.

 

Our faculty, while continuing its education depending on Ondokuz Mayis University,  connected to Sinop University founded in 2007, continues its education.

 

In the 2003-2004 Academic Year, with the decision of the Faculty Board dated 01.04.2010 and numbered 2880, Social Studies Teaching Department was established in 2010 and tarted to teach Social Studies Education Undergraduate Program in 2010-2011 Academic Year. 

 

Turkish Language Education Department was established in 2011 and started to teach Tuekish Language Teaching Undergraduate Program in 2015-2016 Academic Year.

 

The Departments of the Faculty of Education was restructured in accordance with the law date 17.06.2016 and the law no 75950160-101.03.01-36826 and the law date 01.03.2017 and the law no 5850160-101.03.01-15759. Departments and Undergraduate Programs are listed below.

THE DEPARTMENT OF TURKISH EDUCATION

Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program

History:

Sinop University / Faculty of Education / Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education / Department of Turkish Education was established by the decision of the Executive Board Meeting of the Council of Higher Education on 03.11.2011, according to the law no. 2547 amended by the law no. 2880, articles 7/d-2,  7/h and started its education in 2015.

Vision:

The aim of this program is to educate teachers who have national and universal qualifications acquired by science, art and technologies, learns how to learn, are open to development, values people and environment, aims for continuous success, are dependent on the principles of the Turkish National Education System that complies with the contemporary, democratic, secular, republican and Ataturk’s principles. With 3 academic staff and 2 research assistants, it is aimed to educate Turkish teachers attached to the values of modernity / love – respect – tolerance / reliability / honesty / transparency / responsibility / having team spirit / participation / creativity / productivity / protect the national values / adherence to ethical values.

General Features of the Department of Turkish Education:

The Department of Turkish Education consists of a Turkish teaching undergraduate program which aims to train teachers for secondary education level. The Turkish teaching undergraduate program covers four years of education, each of which consists of two semesters. During eight semesters, students have to pass 240 ECTS (147 credits) of compulsory and elective courses in the curriculum. The courses “School Experience” in the 7th semester and “Teaching Practice” in the 8th Semester are practical courses. These practices are carried out in secondary schools which are under the control of the Ministry of National Education. For this purpose, cooperation with Sinop Provincial Directorate of National Education is provided. During the 4-year education and training process of our department, field and field education courses, teaching vocational courses and general culture courses are given to the students. These lessons include; 1st Year: Writing Techniques, Turkish Grammar, Literary Knowledge and Theories, Written Expression, Oral Expression, Ottoman Turkish, Ataturk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution, Foreign Language, Introduction to Pedagogy, Educational Psychology. 2nd Year: Turkish Grammar, Turkish Folk Literature, Old Turkish Literature, New Turkish Literature, Scientific Research Methods, Computer, Teaching Principles and Methods, General Linguistics, Effective Communication, Instructional Technologies and Material Design. 3rd Year: Comprehension Techniques, Children’s Literature, World Literature, Community Service Practices, Special Teaching Methods, Classroom Management, Narration Techniques, Turkish Education for Foreigners, History of Turkish Education, History of Civilization, Assessment and Evaluation. 4th Year: Theater and Drama Practices, Turkish Textbook Studies, School Experience, Counseling, Special Education, Language and Culture, Turkish Education System and School Management, Teaching Practice. In addition to these courses, elective courses are also given during these eight semesters.

Aims of Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program:

Its aim is to educate individuals who have the ability to use Turkish in accordance with the rules and to be able to use it effectively and properly, have sufficient knowledge about the field of Turkish Teaching, pedagogical knowledge and skills, knowing contemporary teaching methods and techniques, and methods of assessment and evaluation, using information and communication technologies technically and pedagogically, having sufficient knowledge about the structure of the  Turkish educational system and its historical development, being committed to Atatürk’s principles and revolutions, believing in democracy, conscious of Turkish national, spiritual, moral and cultural values, possessing scientific and analytical thinking skills, taking on the role of researcher teacher, sensitive to society, environment, and human being, beneficial to society and looking to the future with confidence. In Sinop University, the Faculty of Education, the Department of Turkish Education, there is only one undergraduate program which is Turkish Teaching.

Specifications Required by the Profession:

Who wants to be Turkish teachers must, – Have a general ability at high level, – Have improved verbal ability, have interest in language and literature and like reading books, – Transfer their thoughts to others, – Be able to provide a good learning environment, be careful, be caring, – Be interested in the problems of the profession and trying to find solutions for it, – Communicate well with people; be affectionate, be tolerant, be patient, – Understand students feelings and thoughts, – Be enthusiastic about self-development, be impassioned, be creative people.

Admission Requirements:

In order to be able to enter the Turkish Teaching program one must, – Be a high school or equivalent school graduate, – Get enough score from the verbal (SÖZ) score type by entering the Basic Proficiency Test (TYT) and Field Proficiency Test (AYT) sessions within the scope of Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), – Choose at least one higher education program related to the “Turkish Teaching” undergraduate program in the Preference Form of the Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM).

Working Field:

Those who have completed the Turkish Teaching undergraduate program will receive Bachelor’s Degree in “Turkish Teaching” and the title “Turkish Teacher”. They can work as “Turkish Teachers” in official and private secondary schools of Ministry of National Education. As a Turkish Teacher, they have the opportunity to find a job with a medium income in the state schools and upper medium income in the private schools.

 

THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

General Information about the Program:

The primary aim of the Department of Social Studies Education is to train professional Social Studies Teachers who will educate future generations according to the needs of the age; can think critically and make multifaceted decisions individually and professionally; have problem solving skills; have both theory and practice adequacy; attach importance to human rights, democracy and ethics. There are 6 academic staffs (1 professors, 1 associate professor, and 4 assistant professors) in the Department of Social Studies Education and about 209 students are enrolled in the undergraduate program.

Admission and Registration Requirements:

In order to study in any associate or undergraduate degree in any higher education institution in Turkey the students are required to take the examinations by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Students are placed in the programs by ÖSYM according to their preferences and scores.

Qualification Requirements and Rules:

According to the program, successfully completing compulsory and elective courses corresponding to 240 ECTS and to have a weighted grade point average of at least 2 out of 4 are required qualifications for graduation. Occupational Profiles of Graduates:

The graduates of Social Studies Education program are appointed as Social Studies Teachers with the title “Social Studies Teacher” to public and private education institutions under the control of the Ministry of National Education. In addition, the graduates can work in training centers, in the field of educational materials design and marketing, in broadcasting institutions, in publishing houses and take part in the companies who are developing educational materials. The graduates who wish to pursue an academic career at home or abroad in the field of Social Studies Education or other fields related to education can work as academic staff/research assistant in the academic institutions if they meet the requirements.

Structure of Curriculum:

The Social Studies Education Undergraduate Program is a 4-year program. Students can complete this program by taking courses which are accepted as compulsory or elective courses within the scope of the program, opened by other programs such as the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education Social Studies Teaching, Turkish and Social Sciences Education Department, and other faculties and colleges in Sinop University.

Exams, Evaluation and Grading:

Assessment and evaluation methods applied for each course are described in detail in the “Evaluation System” tables prepared by the related faculty members and included in the information package.
